The Long Journey of the Nintendo Switch From 2017 to 2023
The Nintendo Switch, released in March 2017, has had a remarkable journey from its launch to the present day, 2023. Over these six years, the console has left a significant impact on the gaming industry and has garnered a dedicated fan base worldwide.
When the Switch was first introduced, it revolutionized the gaming landscape with its innovative hybrid design. It offered a seamless transition between playing on a TV and using it as a portable handheld device.
This versatility was met with enthusiasm and excitement from gamers, as it provided a unique gaming experience that was not available with other consoles at the time.
As of 2023, The Switch’s game library continued to expand, offering a mix of first-party Nintendo titles, third-party releases, and a thriving indie game scene.
However, throughout its journey, the Nintendo Switch faced its fair share of challenges and competition. It navigated the evolving gaming market, contending with the release of new consoles from rival companies and the rise of mobile gaming.
Looking ahead to 2023, the Nintendo Switch continues to thrive, with upcoming games generating excitement among fans. But is this enough to get a Nintendo Switch in 2023?
How Much Is the Nintendo Switch in 2023?
According to the official Nintendo website, the prices of the different Nintendo Switch consoles in 2023 are the following:
- Nintendo Switch (Standard Model): Priced at approximately $299, it’s the original version with a 6.2-inch touchscreen display, detachable Joy-Con controllers, and the ability to play both on a TV and in handheld mode.
- Nintendo Switch Lite: Designed for handheld gaming, it has a 5.5-inch touchscreen display, integrated controls, and cannot be connected to a TV. It is priced at approximately $199.
- Nintendo Switch (OLED Model): Released in 2022, it features a larger OLED display, improved audio, increased storage capacity, and an adjustable kickstand. Priced at approximately $349, it offers an enhanced gaming experience.
New Game Releases for Nintendo Switch in 2023
In June 2023, Nintendo announced a kind of unexpected Nintendo Direct. During this Nintendo Direct, they announced several new games.
Some gamers were expecting a new hardware announcement, but that didn’t happen. If we take a look at 2023 only, these are the main stars of the show of Nintendo’s gaming library:
- The Legend of Zelda: Tears of The Kingdom. Link comes back on a new adventure to defeat the evils of Hyrule once again. Zelda TOTK is widely recognized as one of the best games in 2023, and it might win the GOTY Award.
- Pikmin 4. The adventure of the Pikmin, which dates back to the Game Cube Era, receives a new title, coming in 2023 only for Nintendo Switch.
- Metroid Prime: Remastered. If you never had the chance to play Metroid Prime when it first came out on the GameCube, you can now play this vast adventure with updated graphics on the Nintendo Switch System.
- Super Mario RPG. Fans of Mario RPGs, originally released decades ago on the SNES, are now happy for the launch of a totally new Super Mario RPG title inspired by the original game.
- Super Mario Bros Wonder. Nintendo continues to reinvent the world of Super Mario 2D adventures with Super Mario Bros Wonder, set to be released in October 2023.
As you can see, 2023 seems to be a big year for Nintendo. So, it’s the console dead? In my opinion, it doesn’t look like – the Nintendo Switch still has many years ahead.
Advantages of Buying a Nintendo Switch in 2023
Some gamers might believe that there is no point in having a Nintendo Switch in 2023. Nonetheless, let’s take a look at the main three advantages of purchasing a Nintendo Switch in 2023:
1. Extensive Game Library: The Nintendo Switch boasts an extensive game library with a wide variety of titles from popular franchises. From beloved classics to innovative indie games, there is a diverse range of options to cater to different gaming preferences. Just beware of Nintendo Switch corrupted data issues on these games!
2. Unique Console Design: The Nintendo Switch stands out with its unique hybrid design, allowing you to switch seamlessly between playing on a TV and using it as a portable handheld device. This versatility offers convenience and flexibility, enabling you to enjoy your games anytime, anywhere. Most times, you don’t even need two joycons to play Nintendo Switch.
3. Cheaper than New Generation Consoles: Compared to the new generation consoles released in recent years, such as the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, the Nintendo Switch remains a more affordable option. It provides an accessible entry point into console gaming without breaking the bank. Of course, if we compare it to other options, such as the Xbox Series S, then it might indeed feel a little expensive.
Disadvantages of Buying a Nintendo Switch in 2023:
Not everything that shines is gold – there are some noticeable disadvantages of buying a Nintendo Switch in 2023, such as the following:
1. Outdated Hardware: One potential drawback of purchasing a Nintendo Switch in 2023 is that the hardware may be considered outdated compared to newer console models. As technology advances, the Switch’s specifications may not be on par with the latest gaming systems, resulting in potential limitations in terms of graphics and processing power. Besides, the system is getting older, which creates problems such as Nintendo Switch blowing air and Nintendo Switch fan problems.
2. Potential New Nintendo Console: Nintendo has a history of releasing upgraded versions or successor consoles. If a new Nintendo console is released in the near future, buying a Switch in 2023 may leave you with a less advanced system compared to the latest offering. But, as of 2023’s Q3, there is still no official new Nintendo hardware announcement.
3. No Price Drops: While the Nintendo Switch is more affordable than newer consoles, it’s worth noting that Nintendo has been known to maintain its console prices for an extended period. Unlike other gaming platforms that often experience price drops over time, Switch’s pricing structure may remain relatively stable, resulting in fewer opportunities for significant discounts or deals.
Is the Nintendo Switch Worth It in 2023?
I don’t want to give you the classic middle-point answer to this kind of question (i.e., “it depends”), so before answering if the Nintendo Switch is worth it or not, let’s take a look at the most important factors that influence our final decision.
1. Nintendo Will Continue Supporting Switch Players Beyond 2023
Back in 2021, Nintendo announced their plans for the years to come. GameSpot jokingly (or not so jokingly?) said that Nintendo plans to launch a new console before 2100, and that’s obvious.
However, there’s something interesting about their announcement.
Below, you can see an image of the future outlook of Nintendo and its plans to expand the Nintendo IP.
You can see the Nintendo Switch, launched in 2017, and then by its side, the “next gaming system” planned for 20XX.
Do you notice something? I’ll point it out: both the Nintendo Switch and the “Next Gaming System” are surrounded by the same red circle.
In our opinion, this means that the new future Nintendo console will be fully compatible with Nintendo Switch.
At least for a while, the Nintendo Switch will continue to be relevant even years after the release of the new Nintendo console (perhaps the Switch 2?).
This makes sense – Nintendo has sold over 122 million consoles, according to Polygon. They will not let their millions of users down.
You read it here first – the current Nintendo Switch model and the next Nintendo console will both share similar games and features, at least for multiple years.
2. New and Classic Nintendo Switch Games
Another compelling reason why the Nintendo Switch is worth it in 2023 is the extensive library of games available for the console.
Whether you’re a fan of classic Nintendo franchises like Mario, Zelda, or Pokemon, or you enjoy indie games and third-party titles, the Switch offers a diverse selection of games to cater to different tastes and preferences.
Additionally, Nintendo frequently releases new games, ensuring a steady stream of fresh content to keep players engaged and entertained. With a wide variety of gaming experiences to explore, the Switch continues to offer compelling options for gamers in 2023 and beyond.
I’m personally excited about future 2024 games, such as the Luigi’s Mansion 2 Remake and the brand-new Princess Peach Game. The future looks bright for Nintendo Switch players!
3. Unlimited Nintendo Switch Fun for the Next Few Years
When considering whether the Nintendo Switch is worth it in 2023, it’s important to think about the longevity of the console. Despite being released in 2017, the Switch’s popularity has not waned, and its unique hybrid design and innovative gameplay experiences have stood the test of time.
The game library of Nintendo Switch is utterly amazing. Mario Odyssey, Mario Party, Mario Kart, Zelda, Metroid, Kirby, Luigi’s Mansion, Yoshi, Splatoon, Pinkmin… I could name Nintendo exclusives all day long!
By purchasing a Nintendo Switch in 2023, you have access to a whole library of games that can only be played on this system.
So, Should I Buy a Nintendo Switch in 2023?
Yes, the Nintendo Switch is totally worth it in 2023, and you should buy one if you are an avid Nintendo fan.
The game library of the console is excellent, and new games are expected to be added through 2023, 2024, and the following years.
Besides, it looks like Nintendo will continue supporting the Switch after the new Nintendo console is launched, so we have at least 4 more years of Nintendo Switch fun.
Will There Be a New Nintendo System in 2023?
No, there will not be any new Nintendo system in 2023. Nintendo hasn’t announced any new hardware so far, and although they may tell us something in the Nintendo Direct of September, there’s absolutely no information available about this matter.
Therefore, it is safe to say that there are no plans for a new Nintendo system in 2023, and the Nintendo Switch will remain the current flagship console.
Gaming Summary: Is It Worth Buying Nintendo Switch in 2023?
Buying a Nintendo Switch in 2023 is completely, entirely, and utterly worth it.
The Switch isn’t the most powerful gaming console around, but it’s the more unique and fun gaming device available.
I’d say go for it, or wait 1-2 years for the new system to come if you want, but even there, Nintendo will continue supporting Switch users as there are over 122 million of them.

FAQ
Why Is the Nintendo Switch Still $300 in 2023?
The Nintendo Switch is still priced at $300 in 2023 due to its continued popularity, value for money, and sustained demand from consumers. Factors such as production costs, component availability, and Nintendo’s pricing strategy also contribute to its stable pricing.
Is the Nintendo Switch Lite Worth It in 2023?
The Nintendo Switch Lite is cheap and small, but I don’t recommend it whatsoever. If you can, put the extra $100 to buy the classic Switch system, as the Switch Lite can feel really outdated as of 2023 (unless you are only planning to use it as a handheld gaming device).
