Oddball is a classic Halo multiplayer game mode introduced over 17 years ago in Halo 2. Now, oddball has come back to Halo Infinite, and the game mode is as fun as always!
The game mode consists of the following: a player needs to hold a skull, or oddball, for several seconds. Each second counts as one point in the timer. Usually, the matches consist of 80 or 100 points, so holding the ball for this amount of time is required.
At the same time, the other players of the team need to protect the player that is in possession of the ball. There’s only one ball, so as you might get, having the ball in your possession for several minutes is not easy since the enemies will attack you with their best weapons and grenades.
Since Halo Infinite is Split-Screen, you can indeed play oddball with your friends in the same console.
How Do I Select and Play Oddball in Halo Infinite?
There are two ways to select the oddball mode on Halo Infinite.
If you want to play Oddball in Matchmaking against other players online, then do this:
- Launch Halo Infinite and go to the Multiplayer section.
- You need to select either Ranked Arena or Quick Play.
- Hope for oddball to appear in either Quick Play (casual) or Ranked Arena (competitive).
- As of 2022’s Q4, Oddball in Halo Infinite does not have its own playlist. This means that you cannot manually change or select oddball in Matchmaking.

- Launch Halo Infinite and go to the Custom Game section.
- Select Mode Editor, and in Modes, select 343 Industries.

Here Are Some Halo Infinite Oddball Game Modes
There are different variations of the oddball game mode, but ultimately, they all consist of the same. There’s usually more than one round, and the winning team of 2 out of 3 rounds wins the combat.
Among the most famous and prominent oddball modes that you can find in Halo Infinite, we have the following:
- Team oddball: classic oddball. 4 versus 4, classic maps, power weapons, and teamwork. A standard oddball match lasts 3 rounds of 80 seconds, or points, each. The best out of 3 wins the match.
- Ranked oddball: the main difference between ranked oddball and team oddball is that it has ranked presetting. Players have no radar and they start the match with a Battle Rifle instead of an Assault Rifle. Matches are normally 3 rounds of 100 points each.
- Vampire ball: this variation of oddball can be found on the Rumble Pit playlist. It’s a free-for-all version of oddball where the ball carrier can quickly recharge and overcharge their shields by hitting a melee with the oddball.
- FFA Oddball: all against all, total chaos. Just one ball, and let the battle begin!
How to Play Oddball in Halo Infinite Like a Pro
It’s time to be honest here: oddball in HI is not easy to master. You have to earn your skills through practice, which can be a little frustrating to many players.

1. Communicate With Your Team
Communication is key, mostly in Ranked Oddball. Get your mic ready, and make all the callouts you must so you can organize your strategy from the beginning.
Standard Halo Infinite modes, such as Slayer and Big Team Battle, do not require you to communicate that often. However, tactical modes, such as Capture the Flag and Oddball, do require that you think fast and communicate fast with each teammate in the match.
2. Carefully Select the Location of the Ball Holder
Having a notion of the locations of Halo Infinite’s maps is imperative for this tip to work. You need the ball carrier to be protected – you don’t want the enemy team killing him at first sight!
So, when choosing the location of the ball carrier, whether it is you or another teammate, look for a place where you can one, protect the carrier and two, defend from the outside, which is the next tip.
3. Defend From Outside Points
You don’t have two be side-to-side with the carrier at all times – you are not a human shield! If you play Standard Oddball, you will realize that whenever someone leaves the match, bots join it. Bots stay side-to-side carriers as part of their programming, but the best thing that you can do is defend from the outside.
The enemy team will be so focused on the ball carrier that they will simply run forward without thinking about you standing outside the carrier point, so take this to your advantage.
4. Make the Best Out of Halo Infinite Equipment
Halo Infinite has great equipment options: from the Repulsor to the Drop Wall, they are really great for surviving enemy attacks.
Try to control the equipment as much as you can. Remember that the ball carrier is extremely vulnerable – they can’t shoot or protect themselves, so ensuring kills for them is what you have to do.
In the same way, take control of Power Weapons, such as Rocket Launchers and Skewers, as much as possible. This will ensure victory sooner than later.
5. Throw the Ball to the Edge if Everything Else Fails
Not all maps have edges, but most of them do. If you are the ball carrier, and your whole team is dead, but you are alive, your best course of action would be to throw the ball through the edge.
The normal respawn process takes between 8 and 10 seconds, which is more than enough for the enemy team to kill you and get the ball.
Consequently, if you have the opportunity, jump to your death while holding the ball and let the ball reset to its original position. In Oddball, every second counts.
